When Christopher Gray was in high school, his family hit a rough patch.

Raised in a single-mother household in Birmingham, Alabama, Gray found the recession hit his home particularly hard.

“My mom lost her job, and a lot of people in my family lost their job. Because of that, the lights were cut off and we experienced a period of homelessness,” he recalls.

But Gray was determined to go to college, and he worked hard to find scholarships that would make it happen.
