After completing the FAFSA® (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), your Student Aid Report (SAR) will determine your eligibility and contributions for federal aid. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is a number included in the SAR and schools use it to determine your federal aid eligibility—it’s not what you are expected to pay. The colleges that you listed on the FAFSA will be able to access your SAR information electronically so you do not need to send this report to them.

It’s important to read through your SAR and make sure all information is correct. For example, if the EFC is missing or includes an asterisk, that means you may need to provide additional information on your FAFSA.
